Kite surf in Sri Lanka paradise

Srilankakite organises everything you need to enjoy kitesurfing in a beautiful lagoon. You enjoy, they take care of everything. Stéphane, the manage of the place tell us about the place and what they do to limit their impact on the environment.

team-stefWho are you?

My name is Stéphane. I am a passionate kitesurfer from France. I have been living in hot foreign countries for the past 15 years. Now I settled in the north west of Sri Lanka where I run a hotel and kitesurf school since 5 years.

Can you tell more about your activity ?

We are running a kitesurf hotel in Kalpitiya in the north west of Sri Lanka. This country is really beautiful and although it’s small it has a huge variety on landscapes. The people are also very friendly and welcoming. Kalpitiya is a small fishing village located on a peninsula and surrounded by lagoons and small island. It grew in the past years thanks to kitesurfers who come to enjoy the wind blowing most of the year.

What is the local reality about waste and environmental protection in your location?

It is very sad to see the beautiful landscapes and islands being polluted by huge amount of waste.

As our village is very remote and far from major cities locals are not well educated about waste and throw everything on the floor or at sea. Another major problem is the lack of waste collection and management. Those who care a little have no other choice than burning their trash. I the past 2 years there have been some tries to raise awareness with the locals by organizing a few cleaning campaigns on the beach or in the streets but the real issue is the lack of education. Cleaning only will never solve the problem.

How do you integrate tourism and sustainability at the same time?

We select what we can compost in the kitchen and sell cans and plastic bottles to people who recycle them. This year we will get rid of water plastic bottles and use only reusable glass for our guests. We also clean the beaches and places we take our guests to before leaving.

Why do you partner with My Green Trip?

Because we think that the concept is great and that we could always have kits with us wherever we go with guests and do our part in keeping the places clean. We also hope that if locals see us they will start to understand how important it is to keep the places you live, farm or fish from clean.
